Houston area Rice alumni and friends in the healthcare and medical professions are invited to attend the Rice Alumni in Medicine at their annual fall networking social. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet current Rice students studying in pre-med disciplines. Enjoy complimentary light bites and meet Veronica Leautaud, Ph.D., the Director of Education for Rice 360° Institute for Global Health.

As director of education. Leautaud oversees the Global Health Technologies minor, the internship program and collaborations with other international academic institutions. In particular, she has deeply engaged students and faculty at the Malawi Polytechnic.  Leautaud’s previous training and teaching experience is in the areas of viral replication and cancer cell biology. She holds a B.S. from Universidad Iberoamericana, in Mexico City, and a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences in Public Health from Harvard University.

With support from the Lemelson Foundation, Rice 360° collaborates with colleagues at the University of Malawi Polytechnic's new biomedical engineering degree program, the University of Malawi Medical School, and Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital to improve health care through invention by building and sustaining an international cadre of innovation leaders.  Rice 360° aims to make a sustained impact on the health in the developing world by training engineers who can identify practical new technological challenges, infuse engineering skills with entrepreneurial thinking, and work across geographic and disciplinary boundaries with clinical, engineering, and business partners.
Rice students create technologies to improve neonatal survival in low-resource settings. Throughout the design process, students are mentored by clinicians, professional engineers, industrial designers, and business leaders. This hands-on approach fosters entrepreneurial thinking and helps students make the leap from a promising prototype to a sustainable product that can directly impact lives.
